Former Governor Pawlenty Stumps for VA Candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell

Volunteers for and supporters of Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia, were treated to a visit by Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota.  Pawlenty stopped by Victory Headquarters in Alexandria on Wednesday evening to talk about the importance of electing Bob McDonnell to office this November.

Pawlenty, who is serving in his second term as governor of Minnesota, is a rising star in Republican politics.  He has managed to balance Minnesota’s budget three times without raising taxes, this while facing major budget shortfalls.  He is also recognized for implementing education reform and for his innovative, free-market solutions for health care.

While addressing McDonnell volunteers and supporters, Governor Pawlenty talked about all that is at stake in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  He emphasized the reasons why Bob McDonnell is the best choice to increase job growth, boost the economy, reform education, and solve Virginia’s transportation and energy issues.  Pawlenty pointed out that Bob McDonnell has received many endorsements, including that of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), an organization that champions the cause of small business owners.  He also talked about McDonnell’s strong stand against “Card Check,” a bill that would eliminate the secret ballot in union votes.

Governor Pawlenty also discussed the president’s upcoming speech on healthcare, but he primarily stuck to the issue at hand—electing Bob McDonnell as the next governor of Virginia.

Bob McDonnell, who has held a substantial lead over his Democrat opponent Creigh Deeds, in every poll taken in the past several months, has recently fallen under attack from the liberal-leaning Washington Post, about a college paper written nearly two decades ago.  While the Post continues their unfair and biased attacks against Bob, he and others, like Governor Pawlenty, are talking about the real issues at hand.

The Commonwealth of Virginia Is facing a slew of issues, including a $1.5 billion budget deficit, high unemployment rates, major traffic jams on its highways, and over- reliance on outside sources for energy—the Commonwealth is second to California in energy importation.   During every speech, at every press conference, and in every debate McDonnell has discussed his plans to turn Virginia around again.  The ever-resourceful McDonnell even campaigned in traffic that was stopped on I-64 over Labor Day weekend, talking to frustrated drivers about his plan to resolve transportation problems.  In the meantime, his opponent talks about the fact that he isn’t afraid to raise taxes on Virginians who are paying more than their fair share already.

These are trying times for everyone.  We have high unemployment rates and record deficits.  We have a president and a Democrat- controlled Congress who, in bailing out banks and GM, have over-stepped the boundaries of the federal government.  As I write this we have a president who is doing his best to try to destroy our healthcare system as we know it.  Yet, as evidenced in Republican governors such as Tim Pawlenty and in gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, and in the words of Ronald Reagan, we have “beacons of light guiding freedom loving people everywhere.”
